How the Boolean search generator works

  1. 1

    Add titles or synonyms

Put job titles in “Include any of these.” The generator groups them with OR and parentheses, and quotes any title that has a space.

  2. 2

    Require keywords, drop the rest

Words in “Must include all of these” are combined with AND. Words in “Exclude these” are removed with NOT.

  3. 3

    Copy the string

Paste it into the keyword field on LinkedIn, Sales Navigator, or Recruiter. Use LinkedIn’s filters for location, industry, and seniority.

What each operator does

LinkedIn’s keyword field understands AND, OR, NOT, quotes, and parentheses. The operators have to be uppercase. This generator writes them that way.

OperatorWhat it doesExample
ANDEvery term has to appear on the profile.SaaS AND Paris
ORAny one of the terms is enough. Use this for titles and synonyms.("VP Sales" OR "Head of Sales")
NOTDrops profiles that mention the term anywhere, including old roles.NOT intern
QuotesKeeps a multi-word title as one phrase."Chief Revenue Officer"
ParenthesesHolds an OR group together so AND and NOT apply to the whole group.("CMO" OR "VP Marketing") AND B2B

Sales Navigator allows 15 Boolean operators in one query. Recruiter and Recruiter Lite do not cap them. LinkedIn documents the limit in Sales Navigator help.

Tips for a tighter search

  • Quotes, parentheses, capitals

A title with a space is wrapped in quotes. An OR list is wrapped in parentheses. AND, OR, and NOT are written in capitals, which is what LinkedIn expects. The + and − signs are not officially supported, so the string uses AND and NOT.

  • Keep the exclude list short

NOT removes a word anywhere on the profile, including past jobs and the About section. intern, student, and freelance is usually enough. A long exclude list hides people who only mentioned the word once.

  • Put geography in a filter

Location, industry, company size, and seniority work best as LinkedIn filters. Filters do not count toward the operator limit, so the Boolean string can stay focused on titles and one or two keywords.

  • Split a long query

Sales Navigator allows 15 Boolean operators in one query. Recruiter and Recruiter Lite have no operator cap. LinkedIn does not publish a character limit. If a string gets long, run two shorter searches.

After you find the right people, check a connection note with the LinkedIn character counter, or style a post with the LinkedIn text formatter.

FAQs

Is this LinkedIn Boolean search generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser. There is no sign-up, and the keywords you type are not uploaded.

What Boolean operators does LinkedIn support?

AND, OR, and NOT, plus quotes for phrases and parentheses for groups. Type the operators in uppercase. LinkedIn’s help says the + and − signs are not officially supported, so this generator uses AND and NOT.

How many operators can one LinkedIn search use?

Sales Navigator allows 15 Boolean operators in one query. Each AND, OR, and NOT counts as one. Recruiter and Recruiter Lite have no operator cap. LinkedIn also limits operators on free search and does not publish that number. LinkedIn does not publish a character limit.

Do I need Sales Navigator or Recruiter?

No. Paste the same string into the keyword field on LinkedIn, Sales Navigator, or Recruiter. Sales Navigator is the product with the 15-operator cap. On free LinkedIn, who you can see still depends on your network.

Where do I paste the Boolean string?

Open people search on LinkedIn, Sales Navigator, or Recruiter and paste the string into the keyword field. Then set location, industry, company size, and seniority with LinkedIn’s filters.

Why does a Boolean search return the wrong people?

A job title is usually missing quotes, an OR group is missing parentheses, or a NOT term also appears on profiles you wanted. Operators have to be uppercase. On Sales Navigator, a query with more than 15 operators will not run as written.

Can I put a city or country in the Boolean string?

Yes. Add it under “Must include all of these.” LinkedIn’s location filter is the more reliable place for geography, and it does not use a Boolean operator.
